Bio

James “Curly” Mills is an unassuming, young man from the Riverina (New South Wales) who lives and breathes the rural Australian lifestyle. He started life in South Africa in March 1993, immigrating to Australia in 2001. Soon after, he picked up a guitar for the first time and hasn’t put it down since.
Although Curly has always had a love and passion for music, it was only in 2010, when studying agriculture at Tocal Agricultural College in the Hunter Valley (NSW) that he discovered Country Music. It was this initial exposure to Country Music which has acted as a catalyst for Curly’s discovery of other related genres such as Americana, Southern Rock and Texas Blues.

Due to the influence and fusion of the various genres/styles, Curly describes his music simply as “Southern”. Curly’s songs are lyric based and come from the heart, which he unashamedly wears on his sleeve, coupled with simple yet heart-felt melodies. He feels that writing in this way gives him the power to convey a message in a concise manner without it getting lost in noise. As the Country Music motto goes, “it all comes down to three chords and the truth”. A gig with Curly is therefore like being with a friend – uncomplicated, sincere and relatable.

In March 2018, Curly made his on-stage debut at an Open Mic event hosted by the “Bidgee Blues Club” (Wagga Wagga, NSW) and has been a regular performer at these events since. In the following months he began gigging around rural pubs in the towns surrounding his current hometown of Coolamon. In March 2019, he made his first festival appearance, performing at the Ardlethan Country Music Festival.

Although Curly is enjoying his current day job, his new-found passion for music has him preparing to pack up and hit the road, embarking on a series of working ‘holidays’ in which he intends to travel around the country he loves, singing for his supper at night and building his original music repertoire and artistic reputation along the way. He’s approachable and loves meeting new people who enable him to share his passion for music and storytelling.
